[C]a poor orphan girl named Maria was walking to market one [G]day she stopped for a rest by the roadside where a [G7]bird with a broken wing [C]lay a few moments passed till she saw it for it's feathers were covered with [G]sand but soon clean and wrapped it was traveling [G7]in the warmth of Maria's small [C]hand she [F]happily gave her last peso on a cage made of rushes and [C]twine[C7] she [F]fed it loose grain from the market and watched it grow stronger with [C]time now the Christmas Eve service was coming and the church shown with tinsel and [G]lights all of the townfolk brought presents to [G7]lay by the manger that [C]night there were flowers and incense and perfumes in packages fit for a [G]king but for one ragged bird in a small cage [G7]Maria had nothing to [C]bring she [F]waited til just before midnight so no one would see her go [C]in[C7] and [F]crying she knelt by the manger for her gift was unworthy of [C]Him Then a Voice spoke to her through the darkness "Maria what brings you to [G]Me? If the bird in the cage is your offering, [G7]open the door, let me [C]see." though she trembled, she did as He asked her and out of the cage the bird [G]flew soaring up into the rafters on a [G7]wing that had healed, good as [C]new [F]Just then the midnight bells rang out and the little bird started to [C]sing[C7] a [F]song that no words could recapture who's beauty was fit for a [C]king. now Maria felt blessed just to listen to the cascade of notes sweet and [G]long as her offering was lifted to Heaven by the [G7]very first nightingale's [C]song |
